When a drain clog occurs, the first thought that goes through our mind is sometimes, “I can fix that”. Unfortunately, this typically leads you straight for the liquid drain cleaners. Alternatively, it is possible that you may think that putting a bit of liquid drain cleaner down the sink every couple of weeks is a good idea, in order to try and be preventative of a drain clog. This, however, most likely will not help you, as liquid drain cleaners actually hurt more than they help. This is unfortunate, because most people believe this liquid to be helpful, but it really does more harm than good. Let’s take a look at some of the reasons why you may want to switch from using liquid drain cleaners.
Toxicity: Almost every single kind of liquid drain cleaner is made up of highly toxic elements. The off-brand, and inexpensive sorts are more likely to be toxic. Because of the toxic elements, the drain cleaner can be very detrimental to your health. While it is toxic if consumed, it also can damage eyes and the fumes can cause health problems if inhaled. This is a huge factor to take into consideration when trying to determine if you should use a liquid drain cleaner.
Pipe Damage: While the cleaners are supposed to clean the pipes, it can actually cause a lot of damage to the pipes, in that the toxic elements can eat through the pipes. Over time, it can cause severe damage, and cost a lot of money to repair.
Environmental Factors: While the cleaners can cause damage to you and your pipes, it can also cause damage to the environment. The chemicals can harm anything living and that, unfortunately, includes the environment itself.
May Not Work: The worst part about liquid drain cleaners is that they might not even work in the way that they say they do.
